In July 06 I went holidaying in Europe, which was to be my first trip outside Australia. As like most other new and young travelers I did the old contiki, plus a few weeks braving it on my own. Since my trip was only 6 weeks I was initially not thinking of travel insurance as one of my to do's and Europe was pretty safe for a first time trip. However given my zero experience traveling overseas, fact that I was mostly on my own and mainly hearing other peoples backpacking horror stories I was kind of leaning towards putting all the measures in place to cover myself. As I was budget focused, I did the typical internet research for the cheapest and best deal. This was a damn time consuming and annoying task, as you're bounced all over the web, with many sites international and looking dodgy and really you only have like 3-4 really key questions to ask. I finally found All Planet, and they showed me some insurance options. At that stage I was kind of over the insurance thing, but I took a few brochures, had a read and it looked pretty good. I asked a few key questions that were particular to me and my trip, and the consultant was able to answer them and help me fill out the insurance forms which was sweet. I got everything done, organised and paid in one go with one person. For me it was a nice peace of mind, I was on a tour with tones of other people, and travelling budget around Europe. The insurance actually did come in handy, as my new digital camera got smashed in the overhead compartments on my flight from London to Dusseldorf. Also after my Contiki tour I got sick like everyone else on the bus and had to visit the GP in London which cost me a mint. So I was lucky, the insurance came through for me, but I would still get it even if nothing had happened to me as the peace of mind was great.
